Lit Motors captured imaginations with the C-1, a self-balancing, gyroscopically stabilized electric motorcycle promising car-like weather protection and two-wheel efficiency. The concept hinged on heavy, fast-spinning gyros and control algorithms that kept the vehicle upright at a stop and during impacts, while in-wheel motors and a compact cabin targeted commuter practicality. Prototypes and demos suggested feasibility, but production proved challenging: funding cycles, component sourcing, and the complexity of automotive-grade safety validation slowed progress. Even so, Lit reframed how people talk about urban two-wheelers—raising questions about lane usage, parking, crashworthiness, and the tradeoffs between agility and enclosure.
