The Premium Suit Showdown Nobody Asked For (But Everyone Needed)
Spending $800 to $1,500 on a riding suit is a serious commitment. At this price point, you expect more than just crash protection — you want comfort on a four-hour slab ride, ventilation that actually works when temperatures climb past 90°F, and construction quality that makes you feel confident every time you zip up. We put three of the most talked-about premium one-piece leather suits to a 60-day real-world test: the Alpinestars GP Plus R V4, the Dainese Super Speed 4, and the REV'IT! Quantum 2. Here's everything we learned.

The Contenders
Alpinestars GP Plus R V4
Alpinestars has been outfitting MotoGP riders for decades, and the GP Plus R V4 is their answer to the rider who wants race-derived protection in a street-legal package. Built from full-grain leather with bi-elastic panels at the knees, elbows, and shoulders, this suit moves with you rather than fighting your body. It comes equipped with Alpinestars' Nucleon KR-Cei back protector and Bio Armor at the shoulders and elbows as standard, with a chest protector available separately. Retail price: approximately $1,099.

Dainese Super Speed 4
Dainese is Italy's other legendary moto-apparel brand, and the Super Speed 4 is their sport-touring crossover flagship. Full-grain cowhide leather wraps the critical zones, with perforated panels dominating the arms, torso, and legs for maximum airflow. The suit ships with Pro-Shape 2.0 protectors at the shoulders and elbows and a G1 back protector. The fit is slightly more relaxed through the waist than the Alpinestars, making it the most immediately wearable of the three. Retail price: approximately $1,149.

REV'IT! Quantum 2
Dutch brand REV'IT! has quietly become a powerhouse in premium riding gear, and the Quantum 2 is their technical masterpiece. The suit layers cowhide leather with Aramid reinforcement in high-abrasion zones and uses REV'IT!'s own Seesmart CE Level 2 protectors at the shoulders, elbows, and back as standard — the only suit in this test to include CE Level 2 back protection out of the box. Its modular chest protector pocket also accepts optional CE Level 2 upgrades easily. Retail price: approximately $1,299.

Fit and Ergonomics: The First 72 Hours
Break-in period is real with premium leather suits, and all three made us work for it. The Alpinestars GP Plus R V4 started life stiff and aggressive — its race-oriented cut demands a tucked, forward-leaning posture that felt punishing in traffic. By day seven, however, the leather had conformed beautifully to our tester's body and became the best-fitting suit of the bunch for a committed sport riding position.

The Dainese Super Speed 4 required the shortest break-in time. The pre-curved sleeves and slightly roomier torso meant it was comfortable from nearly the first ride. Taller riders, however, noted that the sleeves ran short when fully stretched over the bars — a fitment quirk worth checking in person before purchasing.
The REV'IT! Quantum 2 split the difference. It broke in over about five days and rewarded riders with one of the most balanced ergonomics of the test — upright enough for sport-touring comfort, but supportive enough for spirited canyon riding. The internal stretch panels at the hips were a genuine standout feature.
Protection: What Actually Matters Most
All three suits passed CE certification, but the details vary significantly.
- Alpinestars GP Plus R V4: CE Level 1 shoulder and elbow armor standard; CE Level 1 back protector; optional CE Level 2 chest. Upgrade path available but requires purchasing add-ons.
- Dainese Super Speed 4: CE Level 1 shoulder and elbow armor standard; G1 back protector (CE Level 1); optional CE Level 2 back and chest upgrades available.
- REV'IT! Quantum 2: CE Level 2 shoulder, elbow, and back protection standard. Chest protector pocket pre-installed and accepts CE Level 2 insert. Best out-of-box protection of the three.
For riders who prioritize protection without the hassle of aftermarket upgrades, the REV'IT! Quantum 2 wins this category by default. That said, all three suits are built with serious crash-worthiness in mind, and none would leave you poorly protected in an off.
Ventilation: Who Keeps You Cool?
We tested all three suits on 85–95°F days across urban riding and highway stretches. The results were clear.
The Dainese Super Speed 4 dominated ventilation. Its perforated leather panels covered more surface area than either competitor, and at speed above 40 mph, it transformed into a genuinely breathable suit. Below that speed in city traffic, all three suits became warm — that's simply the nature of leather — but the Dainese recovered fastest once speeds picked up.
The REV'IT! Quantum 2 performed respectably, with well-placed vents across the chest and forearms. The Alpinestars, by contrast, prioritized crash protection and leather density over airflow, making it the warmest of the three on hot days — something to consider if you ride in a warm climate year-round.
Construction Quality and Long-Term Durability
After 60 days and more than 4,000 combined miles, all three suits showed impressive durability. Stitching remained tight on every suit, zippers operated smoothly, and leather showed only natural wear patterns with no cracking or delamination.
The Alpinestars GP Plus R V4 felt the most tank-like — its leather is notably thicker than its rivals, which contributes to its warmth but also to its confidence-inspiring solidity. The Dainese showed the most supple, high-quality leather surface with minimal scuffing even after contact with luggage and abrasive surfaces. The REV'IT! impressed with its Aramid reinforcement zones remaining fully intact and the suit retaining its shape exceptionally well throughout the test.
Value: What Does Your Money Actually Buy?
The REV'IT! Quantum 2 costs the most at $1,299, but it also delivers the most comprehensive protection package out of the box. If you factor in the cost of upgrading the other two suits with CE Level 2 back and chest protectors, the price gap narrows considerably. The Alpinestars and Dainese hover around $1,100–$1,150 base, but both require spending another $80–$150 to reach the same protection level the REV'IT! ships with by default.
The Verdict
After 60 days, our rankings are as follows:
- Best Overall: REV'IT! Quantum 2 — Superior out-of-box protection, excellent fit across riding styles, and outstanding build quality justify the price premium.
- Best for Hot Weather Riding: Dainese Super Speed 4 — Unmatched ventilation, quickest break-in, and a quality leather feel that's hard to argue with.
- Best for Track-Oriented Riders: Alpinestars GP Plus R V4 — If your riding is aggressive and sport-focused, the GP Plus R V4's fit and feel in a full tuck is unrivaled in this comparison.
The honest truth? Any of these three suits will protect you, look the part, and last years with proper care. The best one is ultimately the one that fits your riding style, climate, and budget. Try all three on in person if you can — your body will tell you which one is home.
