KTM Makes It Official: The 2027 Duke 890 R Is Coming

After months of spy shots, leaked documents, and relentless speculation on forums and social media, KTM has finally pulled back the curtain on the 2027 Duke 890 R. The announcement, made at a press event in Mattighofen, Austria, confirmed not only the bike's full technical specification sheet but also its global pricing structure and an official on-sale date. For fans of the outgoing 890 Duke R — already considered one of the sharpest naked middleweights money could buy — the news is nothing short of electrifying.

The 2027 model represents a ground-up evolution rather than a simple refresh. KTM's engineering team has spent the better part of three years addressing every piece of feedback from owners and professional test riders alike, resulting in a machine that the brand describes as "the most focused 890 we have ever built." Bold words, but the numbers and hardware choices back them up convincingly.

Engine: More Power, Broader Spread

At the heart of the 2027 Duke 890 R sits a significantly revised version of KTM's LC8c parallel-twin. Displacement remains at 889cc, but virtually everything else has changed. The engine now produces a claimed 125 horsepower at 9,500 rpm and 100 Nm of torque at 7,250 rpm — gains of roughly 10 hp and 5 Nm over the outgoing R variant. Engineers achieved this through new cylinder head porting, revised cam profiles, a higher 13.5:1 compression ratio, and a completely redesigned intake and exhaust system.

The ride-by-wire throttle system has been updated to work in conjunction with a new six-axis IMU, enabling more precise, lean-angle-sensitive fuelling across all four riding modes: Street, Sport, Track, and the fully customisable My Ride. A new bi-directional quickshifter comes as standard, and the slipper clutch has been recalibrated to handle the extra torque without drama on aggressive downshifts.

Chassis and Suspension

KTM has retained the signature chromoly steel trellis frame but has revised the steering head angle and swingarm pivot position to improve high-speed stability without dulling the famously telepathic steering feel. The subframe is now fully constructed from cast aluminium, shedding around 900 grams compared to its predecessor.

Suspension duties are handled by an all-new partnership with WP Apex. The front end features fully adjustable 43mm USD forks with a revised internals package borrowed directly from the brand's enduro racing programme, offering 130mm of travel. At the rear, a new linkage-assisted WP shock provides 150mm of travel and can be adjusted for preload, compression, and rebound without tools — a welcome quality-of-life upgrade that touring-focused R owners will appreciate.

Brembo Stylema R monoblock calipers gripping 320mm discs up front deliver exceptional braking performance, backed by a cornering ABS system that is now noticeably more transparent in its intervention. The rear runs a single 240mm disc with a two-piston caliper. Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV Corsa tyres are fitted as standard, a significant upgrade over the previous generation's rubber.

Electronics and Technology Package

The 2027 Duke 890 R arrives with what KTM is calling its most comprehensive electronics suite ever offered on a mid-displacement naked bike. Key highlights include:

  • Six-axis IMU with lean-sensitive traction control, ABS, and slide control
  • Launch control and pit lane speed limiter as standard
  • A revised 5-inch TFT colour display with improved daylight readability and wireless smartphone connectivity via KTM MY RIDE app
  • Four riding modes with full user customisation of power delivery, engine braking, and suspension damping
  • Optional KTM Track Pack adding data logging, lap timer, and extended traction control mapping

The instrument cluster now integrates turn-by-turn navigation when paired with a smartphone, and the USB-C charging port has been relocated to a more accessible position beneath the screen shroud.

Ergonomics and Styling

Visually, the 2027 Duke 890 R evolves the aggressive, angular design language KTM introduced with the 790 generation while pushing it further into premium territory. New split LED headlights with a sharp DRL signature give the front end a predatory stare, and the bodywork panels are more sculpted, directing airflow more effectively around the rider at speed.

The seat height has been revised to 835mm — a 5mm reduction that will be welcome for shorter riders — while the handlebar position has been raised and brought 8mm closer to the rider for improved leverage during spirited riding without compromising the committed, forward-leaning posture the Duke is famous for. A low seat option of 815mm and a high seat of 855mm will be available as accessories from launch.

Global Pricing and Launch Date

KTM confirmed the 2027 Duke 890 R will go on sale globally beginning March 2027, with dealer deliveries expected to begin in Europe and Australia first, followed by North America in April 2027 and select Asian markets in May 2027.

Pricing has been set as follows:

  • Europe (Germany): €13,999 OTR
  • United Kingdom: £12,499 OTR
  • United States: $14,499 MSRP
  • Australia: AUD $18,990 RDP

These figures represent a moderate increase over the outgoing model — roughly five to seven percent depending on market — which KTM attributes to the expanded electronics package and upgraded componentry. Order books open in November 2026 through authorised KTM dealers worldwide.

Two Colours at Launch

The 2027 Duke 890 R will be available in two colourways at launch: the iconic KTM Orange with black frame and black wheels, and a new Prestige Black option featuring dark-anodised rims and subtle grey frame highlights. Both colours will be offered at no additional cost.

The Verdict Before the Ride

On paper, the 2027 KTM Duke 890 R is everything the previous generation promised to be and then some. More power, a richer electronics suite, premium brakes and suspension, and a subtly refined ergonomic package combine to create what looks like a genuine class leader. The mid-displacement naked segment is fiercely competitive — with strong rivals from Yamaha, Triumph, and Aprilia all vying for the same enthusiast pound — but KTM's relentless focus on sharp, engaging dynamics has always set the Duke apart. If the real-world ride experience matches these impressive credentials, the 2027 Duke 890 R could be the definitive version of one of motorcycling's most celebrated streetfighters.

First international press rides are scheduled for January 2027, with full reviews to follow shortly after. Stay tuned for our hands-on coverage from the launch event.
